HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
The Railway Higher Secondary School Palakkad is the only school in the state of Kerala, run by the Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India, and has a heritage of 63 years. RHSS/PGT is the first school with Malayalam and Tamil medium established in Southern Railway in 1958.It began as a primary school and was upgraded to High school in 1881, recognized by the Department of Education. The school further elevated to senior secondary level in 2002 offering three streams of Higher Secondary Courses. Now the school offers English medium from class 1st to 12th with CBSE syllabus
This School is catering to the educational needs of wards of Railway men and non railway men. At present more than 50% of the students of this school are wards of non railway men
The institution aims at providing a thorough education and in bringing out those qualities which are the best and noblest in the children so as to make them good citizens. Co-curricular activities of varied nature viz Sports, Youth festivals, manifold club activities, are provided in order to bring out harmonious development in both mind and body.
Teachers of this school are fully qualified in terms of both Kerala Education Rules and are recruited through Railway Recruitment Boards. Teachers are under the administrative control of Senior Divisional Personnel Officer, Southern Railway, Palakkad.
All the important day like Independence day, Children’s day, Republic day etc. celebrating with great éclat.
Our first batch of students appeared for the SSLC examination in the year 1984.Since then, we have been constituently maintaining very good result in the public examinations
Now school has been in the educational domain of Palakkad by achieving excellence in academic and co-curricular areas and successful in attaining 100% Pass in class-X examination continuously for the last 11 year

Total number of students enrolled the school is 280 and total number of faculties are 18 teaching and 3 non teaching members.,teacher student ratiois 1:30.There are 14 divisions from class 1st to 12th
Areas need to improve
Infrastructure :
- At lest 10 class rooms should be converted in to smart room with projector ,smart board and computers
- Floors in the class rooms should be tiled
Digital education
(1) Computer lab : should have minimum 30 compurer per lab. We have two computer labs but having only 30 computers in one lab. 30 more computer are required.
(2) Computer stands are in revolting condition with rusted wood, and it should be replaced with Concrete stands.
(3) digital board and projector in all classes.
Scholarship : talented children are there who are belongs to poor economic condition. They should be supported financially.
Challenges
- Science Lab equipment : newly arranged composite lab required all science subject materials and it costs around Rs.5 lakhs
- Sports Equipments :
(a) It is essentially required Carrom board: the carrom board game helps to mould the player in to a better individual by increasing attention and ,sharpness
